Engine Application: Built for the full Chevrolet Small Block (SBC) family with conventional perimeter bolt heads, including 283, 305, 327, 350, 383 stroker and 400 ci engines. Suits classic Chevrolets, Camaros, Novas, Corvettes, El Caminos, hot rods and SBC swaps where the build calls for a finned retro look in a stealthier black finish rather than polished or chrome.

Perimeter Bolt vs Centrebolt is Critical: SBC Bolt Pattern Fitment: SBC heads come in three valve cover bolt styles, and they are not interchangeable. The earliest staggered perimeter bolt heads (1955 to 1959) use an offset bolt pattern around the edge. Regular perimeter bolt heads (1959 to 1986) use the well-known evenly-spaced perimeter pattern. Centre bolt heads (1987-on) use bolts running down the middle of the cover, common on Vortec and late TBI motors. These covers fit regular perimeter bolt heads only. The easiest visual check is whether the existing valve covers bolt evenly around the edges, in an offset edge pattern, or down the centre.

Mystery Black Coating Process: This cover is part of Cal Custom's Mystery Black range, which uses an electronically applied coating rather than standard paint or powder coat. The process delivers an even, continuous finish across the entire surface, including between the fins where painted finishes can get patchy. The coating is rust resistant, which adds longevity over standard black paint that can chip or oxidise over time, especially on engines that see heat cycling and the occasional weather exposure.

Black Finned Aesthetic: The fins echo period-correct performance valve covers from the 1950s and 1960s, while the black finish keeps the look modern and stealthy rather than retro. A strong fit for blacked-out engine bays, modern street machines, resto-mod SBC swaps and builds where polished or chrome would feel out of place. Pairs particularly well with black accessory brackets, black breather caps, black air cleaners and wrinkle-finish or black intake manifolds for a cohesive blacked-out theme.

Tall Profile and Cast Construction: The taller cover height provides clearance for a high-lift camshaft, roller rockers, shaft mount rockers or a stud girdle, which is essential on most performance SBC builds. Cast aluminium construction is thicker and more rigid than stamped steel, dampens valvetrain noise, and resists distortion around the bolt holes during torquing.
- Practical Buyer Tip: Each set includes baffles with self-tapping screws (fit the baffles before installing the covers, as the screws sit on the underside), two grommets for breathers, and the valve cover retaining bolts and washers, which is a more complete kit than many alternatives. Source SBC perimeter bolt valve cover gaskets separately, as gaskets are not included. The Mystery Black coating is more durable than standard black paint, but still benefits from gentle care. Use a soft microfibre cloth and mild engine bay cleaner, and avoid harsh degreasers or abrasive polishes that can mark or dull the finish over time.
